The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty manageable for the billionaire proprietor.
