England's Assistant Coach Reveals His Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Anthony Barry was playing for Accrington Stanley. Today, he is focused supporting the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. The road from the pitch to the sidelines commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his purpose.

Rapid Rise

The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he established a standing with creative training and great man-management. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, plus he took on international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the peak in his words.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a methodical process that allows us for optimal success.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Dedication, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour day and night, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies feature mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the national team spirit and rejects terms including "pause".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he declares. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend most of our time to. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of changes and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We need to execute an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ all the time available since we took the job. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships among them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the physicality, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run like they do every week, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and increase execution.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in attack and defense – playing out from the back, closing down early. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data these days. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to increase tempo in that central area.”

Thirst for Improvement

His desire for development is all-consuming. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class contained luminaries including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison locally, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard included convinced and he hired Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of nearly all assistants but not Barry.

Lampard’s successor with the club became Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he got Barry out of Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
