A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
