Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
