Los Angeles Experiences Record-Breaking High Temperatures Only One Week After Severe Winter Storm.
In the wake of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, LA is now grappling with unseasonably high weather for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Readings
During the day Friday, the temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in downtown Los Angeles, as reported by weather officials. This easily surpasses the old record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were noted on NWS graphics for the region.
Public Health Warnings
The weather service stated that Friday's weather posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Reversal
This sudden spike in mercury arrives just after a powerful storm system that struck the state last week. That storm brought heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to the mountains, causing flash flood warnings for countless residents.
Sadly, the severe weather also triggered a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead cooler conditions will arrive. Temperatures were expected to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in central Los Angeles by overnight.
Additional areas that hit the 90-degree mark included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were expected to reach the high eighties.
In the coming days, downtown Los Angeles can expect readings in the 80s, with cooler weather expected for the start of March.
