On Sunday morning, UK rail authorities reported the arrest of two men after a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in Cambridgeshire. An individual, a 32-year-old black British national, and another, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were initially held. Subsequently, the 35-year-old was released with no charges, and authorities confirmed he had no connection in the incident.

Updated Protocols to Fight False Claims

In August, revised directives were issued to address the spread of misinformation on social media, which had intensified after the deadly attack of three schoolgirls in Southport last summer.

Yet, advocates have raised concerns that this approach could unintentionally encourage an excessive focus on the racial background of those accused and fuel further rightwing conspiracy theories when details are not shared with the general population.

A former chief superintendent, who worked in the UK's largest police force, described the need for law enforcement to disclose the ethnicity of suspects in cases involving ethnic minorities as an "unforeseen outcome".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he stated.

He voiced understanding for his former colleagues in the police, explaining that they are “in a no-win situation”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Response from Officials

A Conservative MP, whose district includes the area where the train halted, called it “sad” but necessary for police to swiftly release the racial identities of those detained.

“It’s not ideal, but I comprehend the reasons. They essentially have no choice at this point,” he commented, adding that social media are used to advance narratives, making it critical for police to provide facts to counter rumors.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Before the official disclosure, conservative figures had demanded a faster response. As an example, Chris Philp urged for timely release of suspect information, while Nigel Farage stated on X that the people needed to know “as soon as possible”.

Additionally, extremist profiles online attempted to exploit the incident. A profile named “UK Nationalist”—boosting thousands of followers—shared an unsubstantiated claim that a knife-wielding man had been shouting a religious phrase.

Ongoing Suspicion

Despite authorities clarified that the suspects were British nationals, some figures continued to suggest that information was being concealed. A former Reform UK co-leader claimed it was “hard to believe” that the attack was unrelated to terrorism, despite official statements indicating otherwise.

Origin of the Directives

The guidance were developed by the UK police leadership body in acknowledgment of “public concerns” and to ensure law enforcement procedures were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

The initiative came soon after Reform UK accused authorities of concealing the details and migrant background of individuals charged in a separate case in Warwickshire.

Earlier this year, when a vehicle drove into spectators celebrating Liverpool FC’s winning, local authorities revealed that the arrested man was a white UK national to quash rumors of a terrorist attack by an individual of Asian origin.

Police leaders stressed that choices on releasing such information would be made by individual police forces, taking into account broader moral and legal factors. Verifying a suspect’s immigration status would fall to the UK interior ministry, not law enforcement.
