That Gruesome Animated Movie Ending That Haunts Fans
Out of all the mature cartoon movies I have ever viewed, no other has lingered in my mind as much as the terror-laced finale of a graphically gory and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spanish writer-director created a dark, somber , often savage universe that included a few small , forlorn hints of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a desire to expand animation even more, the filmmaker explained that it was rather an attempt to communicate a widespread, multicultural message concerning “the shared root of every conflict.”
That message is conveyed via a band of vividly colored bears , clearly inspired by a well-known series of cuddly figures.
Being raised in a culture focused on aggression and the defense industry, a lot of these animals are fixated on exterminating the mythical beasts, due to a sacred text that claims them they previously were rulers of the woodland, until the unicorns forced them out.
Some haven’t fully fallen for the propaganda, , choose to sample narcotics or mate in the forest.
Unlike their cuddly counterparts, these colorful critters display genitals , clear libidos.
For a particular particularly cruel, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the war with the unicorns transforms into a route toward dominance — and specifically to supremacy over his more tender, nicer brother Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor and a seeming antisocial figure , and as terror dominates his squad and kills his teammates sequentially, he grabs increasingly influence on his own behalf, in increasingly violent, destructive ways.
Simultaneously, the horned creatures are suffering their own nightmare, in the form of an expanding, destructive monster in their woods.
“At the beginning, it seems like a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker commented. “However it evolves into a more intense and sad movie. And in the finale, it becomes a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the more playful films from an iconic filmmaker, that discover a wicked pleasure in letting animated figures curse, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Subsequently it turns into closer to a more grim movie by that same creator, featuring progressively explicit brutality and a noticeable relation to genuine suffering of battle.
