The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
