The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
