Ultra-Conservative Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile New Head of State.
Following a conclusive final ballot, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Triumph
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having previously been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Built On Security and Migration
Recognized for his staunch socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was primarily centered on promises to address growing violence and significantly curb migration.
He consistently cited foreigners, especially the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the race, he issued an stern warning for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face removal.
His plans included U.S.-style measures such as constructing holding facilities, barriers, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Broader Wave
Numerous analysts interpret Kast's victory as aligning with a larger rightward wave in the region, coming after recent political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts further describe it as a part of the predictable alternation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Clear Mandate
In spite of his decisive electoral triumph, Kast is not expected to have an clear majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when all conservative parties are grouped together.
This legislative reality could hinder his plans, such as a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.
"We have many aspects about what a Kast government will operate that we don't know because he has not said how he will achieve them," said a political analyst.
The analyst stated, "On the economy, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies associated with the right-wing. But the area with far less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his central theme during the race."
